Unfortunately we are now coming to the end of our Action Centre Project.
We have all had an interesting 3 years filled with many ups & downs that we
have experienced during our job search process. Some of our workers found work
soon after DDM, while others used the time to explore their options, & some
opted to retrain for different fields of employment. At this time this brings
us to an adjustment rate of about 85%. This will be a bitter/sweet time for the
remainder of us at the Action Centre to see this come to an end although you
are looking forward to moving on with the next phase of your lives. Attached are lists of providers that may
assist you if still in need of help.

A FEW WORDS FROM THE COMMITTEE CHAIRPERSON

I wanted to thank Vera Burges and Debbie Herman for
the excellent job they did as Coordinators of the action centre.  Their exceptional organizational skills and
the true caring of what was happening to our workers in their time of need was
always evident.

I also wanted to thank Gord Falconer from IAM who was
with us every step of the way ensuring workers needs were being met and
providing guidance and advice on what services would best assist our workers.
The Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities provided the funding for
this project and valuable guidance from our Adjustment Advisors and Consultant
Sue Dertinger.  Finally, the peer helpers
and committee

members; Janet Barcroft, Kathryn Edwards, Louise
Swinton, Monika Himsl, Karen Robinson, Carol Triska, Margaret Jakucinskas and
Sherry Browm.  Committee members made decisions’
regarding the action centre during committee meetings with the workers best
interests always in mind.  The success
achieved by this Action Centre can be attributed to all of the above mentioned
individuals who supported it while it was open.

We are open today,  Monday, April 25th,  and would like to encourage those that are going to be going to the Siemens Job Fair next month (still no “official” date set) to come out to the Action Centre to have your resume or cover letter fine tuned.  We are expecting to be pretty busy once the Siemens job fair is officially announced so the earlier you come in the better.

 NOTE:  Now is the time to check your job application tools.  Does your resume or cover letter require an update?  Do you need to review your interview skills?  Please pop into the Action Centre so that we can help you get ready for this big event. 

REMINDER

A call to the people you are using as a reference is definitely in order.  Especially if you haven’t spoken to them in a while.  You don’t want to make the mistake of assuming that you are ”best friends” with a past supervisor only to find out they are not returning your potential future employer’s calls.  Remember, your references are doing so out of the goodness of their hearts.  No one is paying for their time or nice words.  Please treat them with respect and always thank them in some way.

• Invite them out for a coffee or drink
• Call them up and have a chat to catch up
• Send them an E-mail with an encouragement to contact you back
• Invite the person over to your house for a thank you dinner/BBQ

The Action Centre is up and running again and we would love to see you.
